What's actually happening in Oak Brook this summer?
The Oak Brook Polo Club and Mayslake Hall are both dark for the 2026 season, but free Thursday night concerts at the Oaks Amphitheater and a Fullersburg Woods newly listed on the National Register of Historic Places have quietly become the summer's real anchors.
Two of Oak Brook's traditional summer anchors are dark this year. The Oak Brook Polo Club, a Sunday habit for decades at Cecil Smith Field, is not running its 2026 season. Mayslake Hall and the Portiuncula Chapel, the Tudor Revival heart of the Peabody Estate that usually carries the estate's cultural calendar, are closed for master plan work and will stay closed through 2027 per the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.
That leaves a gap in the summer routine a lot of longtime residents haven't fully mapped yet. The gap has been filled, quietly, by two places that used to feel like second-tier options: the Oaks Amphitheater on Kensington Road, and Fullersburg Woods on Spring Road. Thursday Nights Have Become the Standing Appointment
The Oak Brook Park District's Summer Concert Series is back in 2026, free, sponsored by Wintrust Community Bank, and running Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Oaks Amphitheater at 1315 Kensington Road. Concessions are cashless. Proceeds from the concession stand go toward the Swim Central aquatic video display board, so a round-up at the register isn't just spare change into a jar.

July 30 Is the Night to Actually Block Off
If you only pick one Thursday, pick this one. The Park District has stacked a rare doubleheader on July 30: A Walk in the Park Wine Tour from 4:30 to 7:00 through Central Park, followed by Second Hand News at the Oaks Amphitheater from 6:30 to 8:30. The wine tour is a casual guided stroll, and the concert catches the tail end of it on the same grounds. You can, in theory, do both without moving your car.
That kind of programming density in a single evening is new. It's the sort of thing the polo club used to build a Sunday around, and it's now happening on a Thursday in Central Park.
Fullersburg Woods Just Picked Up a National Credential
Fullersburg Woods, 220 acres tucked along Salt Creek between 31st Street and York Road, was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Village of Oak Brook flagged the listing this month in its Only in Oak Brook newsletter, citing the preserve's Civilian Conservation Corps craftsmanship from the 1930s and its long run as a conservation and education site. The Nature Education Center itself was built by the CCC, and several of the shelters and bridges you've probably walked past without noticing are original to that era.
The listing doesn't change what the trails feel like on a Saturday morning. What it changes is the story you tell someone about the place. When friends drive in from the city and ask what there is to do besides the mall, "220-acre National Register preserve with a working 1850s gristmill" reads differently than "there's a park down the road."
That gristmill, Graue Mill and Museum, sits inside the same preserve and remains the only operating waterwheel gristmill in Illinois. Programs on milling, spinning, and weaving illustrate life between 1850 and 1890. The nearby Ben Fuller House, small-timber and balloon-framed, is one of the oldest structures of its kind in the state.
The Nature Education Center itself is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through mid-November, and the surrounding preserve is open from one hour after sunrise to one hour after sunset. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trails. Alcohol is not.
A Three-Hour Saturday Loop That Most Residents Haven't Run
Here is a loop worth trying between now and August. Park at the Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center on Spring Road. The main paved-gravel trail is roughly a three-mile loop that follows Salt Creek, crosses the water a few times on the CCC-era bridges, and passes the dam near the southern end. Birders should bring binoculars. The oak woodlands host beavers, red foxes, herons, egrets, and spring and fall migratory warblers. The Night Heron Trail is the fall-color pull, but it's a quiet walk in high summer too.
Detour to Graue Mill for the working wheel, then head back north and drop your car at the Oaks Amphitheater lot before the 6:30 concert. Between the trail and the show, there is enough time to eat, but not so much that you're killing an afternoon. That's the shape of a Saturday most Oak Brook residents have not tried yet, and it uses two places the Village is actively drawing attention to right now.
What's Dark This Year, So You Can Plan Around It
The gaps matter as much as the additions. If someone in your household still expects these on the calendar, adjust.

The upshot for residents: the parts of Oak Brook's summer that still work are the free, outdoor, walkable ones. The parts that don't are the ticketed, indoor, or long-tradition ones. It is a very different summer than 2022 or 2023 was, and the calendar is worth building fresh rather than assuming last year's routine holds.
One Practical Note for Hosts
If you have out-of-town guests coming in August, the sequence I would recommend is: morning walk at Fullersburg, lunch on a patio at Oakbrook Center, an afternoon at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art or the trails at Mayslake Forest Preserve, then a Thursday concert if the timing lines up. That itinerary uses only free or low-cost stops, keeps everyone outdoors during the best hours, and doesn't lean on any of the venues that are closed this year. It also tells a fuller story about the Village than a single afternoon at the mall does, which is the version of Oak Brook worth showing off.
