Downtown Downers Grove has several new restaurants arriving in 2026, including Ranalli's Pizza Bar at 5200 Main Street, The Rec League on Warren Avenue, Fonda de Paula, and the already-open Entourage. Together they signal that downtown has become a first-choice location for Chicago restaurant groups, not a delayed one.
For years, downtown Downers Grove got restaurant concepts on a delay. A group built a following in Chicago, then Naperville, and eventually a spin-off landed here. That order is inverting, and the clearest signal is Ranalli's Pizza Bar choosing 5200 Main Street for its first location outside Chicago. Once you notice that, the rest of the fall lineup reads differently. The Main Street openings, the Warren Avenue build, and the fall event calendar are not a random cluster of updates. They are the same story told at four different addresses.
The Ranalli's Tell
Ranalli's is a longtime Chicago pizza brand under Four Corners Restaurant Group, the hospitality company behind Federales, Benchmark, and Gaslight. It operates in Lincoln Park and the Loop, and Downers Grove will be its first suburban location, taking over the space long occupied by Emmett's Ale House. Opening is targeted for fall 2026.
For a resident, the mechanics matter more than the marketing. Four Corners builds for dense, walkable neighborhoods. Choosing Main Street over a strip pad on Ogden or 75th is a bet that our downtown behaves more like a city neighborhood than a suburban commercial corridor. The 7,300-square-foot build reflects that, with a lively dining room, an expansive dog-friendly sidewalk café, and a private dining room sized for showers, corporate happy hours, and post-game parties.
What's Taking Over Which Storefront
If you have walked Main in the last year, you have seen the paper-covered windows. Here is what is behind them:
- Ranalli's Pizza Bar, 5200 Main Street, in the former Emmett's Ale House. Opening fall 2026.
- Entourage, 5101 Main Street, in the former Capri space. Open now.
- Fonda de Paula, downtown, a new Mexican fonda concept. Announced.

Entourage is already serving, run by the same family team behind Vai's Italian Inspired Kitchen and Entourage in Naperville. If the room feels different from Capri, that is because the operators took it down to the studs and rebuilt, moving or removing most of the interior walls. It is a full rebuild wearing the old address, and it runs counter to the usual pattern: family groups have historically incubated in Naperville and stayed there. This team chose to put its second location inside our village instead.
Fonda de Paula fills a slot downtown did not really have, a traditional Mexican fonda, intimate and family-owned. The menu runs from chilaquiles and rajas con queso omelets to pescado Veracruz, carne asada, and enchiladas across breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast is the tell. Very little of downtown serves an actual sit-down breakfast, and none of it in this register.
The Warren Avenue Move
The most interesting building coming out of the ground is not on Main. It is a block off, at 844 Warren Avenue, and the team is local.
The Cadence Kitchen and Foxtail group is building The Rec League, a 20,312-square-foot, two-story venue with a patio and fire pit. The first floor holds a dining room and a large bar that opens onto the patio; the second floor is built for golf bays, billiards, and darts. The exterior, per the planning application, is a California mountain vernacular of wood timbers and stone. It earned a unanimous 9-0 recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission, drew Village Council praise on first reading, and is now under construction for a fall 2026 opening. The lot has history: a restaurant approved there under a 2019 planned unit development never got built.
Why it matters for the shape of downtown is simple. Cadence and Foxtail are the operators most residents would name if asked to describe the current dining bench, and putting a 20,000-square-foot food-and-games venue on Warren pulls foot traffic a block off Main for the first time in years. The Metra platform is still the center of gravity, but the walking radius just widened.
The Fall Calendar Sits on Top of All This
The dates worth putting on the fridge:
- September 18 to 19: Oktoberfest, sponsored by the District 58 Education Foundation, in the Burlington Avenue commuter lot between Main and Forest. Proceeds go to District 58 programs.
- Every Saturday through October 17: The Downtown Downers Grove Market, in its last full month before winter.
- October 1 to 23, Thursdays and Fridays: The Downtown Fall Scavenger Hunt.
- Late October: Halloween Window Painting and the DG Historical Society Living Cemetery walk.
Oktoberfest shows how much downtown has changed. It sits directly on the Metra commuter lot, and its title sponsors have included Cadence Kitchen and The Foxtail, meaning the operators behind The Rec League also underwrite the largest fundraiser for District 58. Several of the biggest food operators expanding downtown this fall are the same names sponsoring the biggest civic events. That is not a coincidence. It is a small downtown running on the same handful of people.
By the time Ranalli's opens at 5200 Main, the block will have shifted enough that your short list of where to grab dinner without booking two weeks out will look different than it did in 2024. The Emmett's era at that address ran a long time. The room reading like a Four Corners neighborhood bar is a change worth registering.
